Leftover apples are perfect for making applesauce for dinner tonight. This is a great way to use up those apples before they over ripen. Kids and adults love homemade applesauce. It’s healthy, preservative free and with one taste it will be hard to settle for commercial applesauce ever again. Homemade applesauce makes a delicious side dish for any meal.

1 lb. apples (about 3 medium apples)
¼ cup water
1/4 cup granulated sugar (optional)
1 Tbsp. lemon juice (optional)
1. Wash, stem, quarter, core and peel the apples.
2. Cook the apples until soft with just enough water to prevent them from sticking, about ¼ cup. Cooking time can be from 5 to 20 minutes. Cook until soft.
3. Add the sugar and adjust to taste. Reduce heat and simmer for 5 minutes.
4. Chill and serve.
Tips and variations
Adding cinnamon, nutmeg or allspice can make a spiced applesauce. Add the spices during the last 5 minutes of cooking.
Sweet eating varieties of apples, such as Golden Delicious, Jonathan or Fuji, may lessen the need for adding sugar.
